We talk to machines every day, asking for directions, setting reminders, even sharing
our feelings in quiet moments. But what happens when those machines start to talk
back in ways that feel a little too human? As artificial intelligence becomes more lifelike,
it’s starting to play a new role in our lives: part search engine, part therapist, part
companion. But experts are beginning to ask a deeper question one that doesn’t have
easy answers: How does talking to AI affect our mental health?

It’s one thing to type a quick question into a chatbot. It’s another to find yourself opening
up about your fears, your hopes, or your darkest thoughts. But it’s happening often. AI is
getting better at recognizing emotional cues and mimicking empathy. It can “listen”
without interrupting and respond with eerily appropriate words. For some people,
especially those who feel isolated or misunderstood, this can feel like a lifeline. But
here’s where things get complicated: AI isn’t a person. It doesn’t really understand you.
And it definitely can’t tell when something’s wrong the way a trained therapist can. In
fact, some users have become deeply attached to AI chatbots, even forming obsessions
or slipping into delusions. There have even been reports of individuals spiraling into
mental health crises fueled not just by what they were feeling, but by how the machine
responded.

These stories are real enough and troubling enough that OpenAI recently hired a
forensic psychiatrist. Their job? To study how people emotionally react to interacting
with AI, especially in vulnerable moments. Forensic psychiatrists usually work in legal or
crisis settings. So, bringing one into the world of tech says something loud and clear: AI
might be more than just a tool. It might be a mirror one that doesn’t always reflect us in
helpful ways. This is especially true when AI gives answers that sound supportive but
lack real-world context. In some cases, these systems can reinforce dangerous thinking,
not because they want to but because they’ve been trained to reflect the patterns in
human language. And that can be risky for someone who’s already struggling.
Scientists are trying to make it safer. A growing field of research is exploring how AI
might help identify mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, or even
schizophrenia by analyzing patterns in voice, language, or behavior. The potential is
incredible: quicker diagnoses, better screening tools, more access in underserved
communities. But here’s the catch: most of these systems are still trained on narrow,
biased datasets. They may work well for some groups and fail for others. They’re not
always accurate, and many of them can’t explain why they give the answers they do.
Even more concerning? There are no universal rules yet for how this tech should be
tested, or what to do when it makes a mistake.

So what can we do? For starters, treat AI like what it is: a powerful tool, not a therapist,
not a best friend, and not a mind reader. If you’re using AI to explore your thoughts or
get support, make sure you also have real people you trust in your corner. Whether it’s
a mental health professional or a supportive friend, human connection still matters most.
And if you ever feel like something an AI says is making things worse or pulling you into
dark or obsessive thinking step away and talk to someone. The best support doesn’t
come from perfect answers. It comes from being seen and heard by someone who truly
understands what it means to be human.
